FRAGAS DE SÃO SIMÃO

1 - RIVER BEACH
39° 54' 57.2" N;  8° 19' 03.4" W

The beach is a 15-minute walk (by footpath) from the village of Casal de São Simão.
The water of the Ribeira de Alge, which passes on the way to the Zêzere, is so clear that you can see the small stones inside.
The abundance of laurels and cork oaks gives the air a comforting fragrance and the green of the surrounding mountains, which lead us to the Lousã mountains, envelop us in a beautiful setting.
The river beach is located between two imposing cliffs, where climbing is practiced with several equipped routes, rappel or slide. The “smallest” stones are used as a solarium or diving board.

When walking south, beside the beach, there are several levadas and layers of the region's original flora.
Here, you can walk along the Fragas de São Simão Walkways and enjoy the natural landscape that surrounds this region.

2 - FRAGAS DE SÃO SIMÃO WALKWAY
39° 54' 52.2" N; 8° 18' 59.7"W

Located in Fragas de São Simão, on the banks of Ribeira de Alge, municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, the Fragas de São Simão Walkways connect the Fragas de São Simão Viewpoint to the Shale Village of Casal de São Simão, crossing the back of the gorge from Ribeira de Alge, on a journey through different spaces and times.

The landscape gravitates between the ruggedness of the Fragas de São Simão and the agricultural landscape of the valley, which evolved harmoniously and interdependently over the centuries. Along the route there are natural areas, sometimes on steep slopes, sometimes on valley bottoms, remnants of Laurissilva. The route also leads to the Fluvial Beach with the same name, where the Ribeira de Alge cuts through the rock mass and follows its path towards the Zêzere. From here, it ascends towards the Schist Village of Casal de São Simão, guarded by the hermitage that gives it its name, Ermida de São Simão, one of the oldest temples in Figueiró do Vinhos, dating from 1458.
