Fátima is a Portuguese city located in Serra de Aire, parish headquarters, subdivision of the municipality of Ourém, in the province of Beira Litoral, Centro region and sub-region of the Middle Tejo, with 71.29 km² of area and 11 596 inhabitants ( 2011). Its population density is 162.7 inhabitants / km². Its worldwide fame is due to the account of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by three little shepherds from May 13 to October 13, 1917.
Due to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, located in the place of Cova da Iria, the city has become one of the most important international destinations for religious tourism, receiving about six million people a year.
Fátima is located in the heart of the Serra de Aire, at an altitude of 350 meters. Currently, it belongs administratively to the Centro Region (Beiras Region) of Portugal.
The city of Fátima is in the transition zone between the Mediterranean climate with a maritime influence, typical of the west coast, and the continental Mediterranean climate typical of the interior. Thus, the climate of the city of Fátima is characterized by hot, dry, and very sunny summers, with temperatures that vary, approximately between 30 ° C and 15 ° C and cool, humid winters and with temperatures that normally vary between 15 ° C and 5 ° C.
